The music scene is very much alive in the Philippines, that is if you’re looking at the other side of the spectrum. People inside the industry think the scene here is dying, that there’s no more new originals released and all the songs you hear on local radio are mostly revivals of old hits and are dominated mainly by foreign music.
Although it’s true that most songs played on the airwaves are basically from foreign artists and Original Pinoy Music (OPM) revivals – popular classic songs that have only been re-arranged and sung by new artists, there are still composers out there who write new compositions.
Actually songwriters have increased in numbers nowadays, just take a visit at some bars and music venues like Conspiracy Garden Cafe wherein Songwriters Night is held every first and third Monday of the month and you’ll be seeing and hearing these artists perform their originals. All they need is exposure which unfortunately the media and the industry ain’t supporting.
So here’s what Indiepinoy president Nolit Abanilla’s reactions to Dingdong Avanzado’s statements on songwriting.
