The last surviving original member of punk band The Ramones, Tommy Ramone has died at age 65.
According to Rolling Stone, Andy Schwartz, New York Rocker magazine publisher has announced the death in behalf of Tommy’s family. The drummer died last July 11 at 12:15 pm and was in care after a treatment for cancer of the bile duct.
Tommy was a co-founder of The Ramones, forming the band in 1974 in New York City with singer Joey Ramone, bassist Dee Dee Ramone and guitarist Johnny Ramone. With hit songs like “I Wanna Be Sedated,” “Blitzkrieg Bop” and among others, they have influenced many rockers of different generations and had been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
The band was popularly known for their leather jackets and long black mops of hair
Tommy started out his career in the band as their manager but later on became their drummer so Joey could concentrate on his singing. He appeared on the band’s first three studio albums Ramones and 1977’s Leave Home and Rocket to Russia, as well as the band’s 1979 live record, It’s Alive and has written “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”.
He stayed active being a producer, having worked with the Replacements and other bands.
The Ramones disbanded in 1996 and released a farewell tour album in 1997 titled “We’re Outta Here!”.
It seems like the band made a statement there as all of the members were gone now after Tommy followed his comrades. Johnny Ramone (John Cummings) died of prostate cancer in 2004, Joey Ramone (Jeff Hyman) died in 2001 of lymphoma, Dee Dee Ramone died in 2002 from a drug overdose. Perhaps they’re going to have an encore up there. Hey Ho Let’s Go!!!
RIP to Tommy and condolence to his family..
